Galette des Rois in Japan

January 13, 2012 10:10 pm in Culture, Food & Drink by Envoy Media

A French tradition, the Galette des Rois, or French King Cake, is a type of pastry with frangipane filling. On January 12th French bakeries all over Japan had a chance to show off their creations when the French Embassy once again hosted their annual event to celebrate this unique cake. No two cakes are alike as each bakery has its own way of making and decorating it. Traditionally each cake contains a small porcelain figurine hidden somewhere inside and the one who finds it gets to be crowned “King”.
